Why I Love Donating My Hair

Donating Hair

My hair grows ridiculously fast. My routine for the past 8 years or so has been to let my hair grow out really long, then cut off 10 inches to donate it. Today was a haircut day! This is by far the shortest it’s ever been.

Here are a few reasons why I love donating my hair:

It inspires hope
I’ve seen a few videos of testimonials from hair donation recipients and hope is a common thread throughout most of them. It’s a motivating thought to think that this simple act of donating hair may give someone that little extra dose of confidence, strength, and comfort they need to keep fighting their battle.

It inspires selfless giving
There is a special kind of blessing deposited in our hearts when we serve, give, and bless others without the hindrance of expecting something in return. Donating my hair is a means of giving in which I know the recipient will never be able to repay me.

It inspires others
I was initially inspired to do this by another woman in my church who had donated her hair. Since I started, there have been a couple people who have told me that my donation inspired them to give in this way as well. It’s an awesome thing to know that my actions helped to provoke and encourage another to give.

And last but definitely not least…

It inspires my daughter
I’ve donated my hair a few times over the years, but today was by far the most meaningful… because my daughter was in the chair next to me getting her hair cut for her first donation!!

This was a fun way for her and I to serve together. She told me later that she is excited to do it with me again.

If you’re interested in donating your hair…

There are a few different charities you can choose from to donate to. Each one has it’s own requirements so I recommend you do a little research to determine if your hair meets the needed criteria before you make the chop. Also, check to see how a person goes about applying for hair. Some of the charities charge a fee to their clients. I’d rather give to an organization that gives my donation freely to someone who needs it.

Here are a couple ideas to get you started:

Children With Hair Loss – 8″ minimum

Pantene: Make The Cut – 8″ minimum

Wigs For Kids – 12″ minimum

I’m familiar with Locks of Love. I was in the store the other day and I saw a group of women who were obviously part of a fundamentalist christian belief system that forbid them from cutting their hair (and they couldn’t wear make-up and they had to wear long jean skirts – with dozens of other rules, no doubt). All I could think of that I was glad that many men and women make that sacrifice to make things a bit more normal for people who don’t get the option.

I used to donate to Locks of Love but have recently discovered that they sell or throw out most of the hair that is donated 😦 And yes, I know many women who hold the conviction of keeping their hair long. My personal conviction is to share what I’ve been given..cut it off!!! 🙂
